It was close to 8 pm on a Tuesday and even though we were assured a dry day, it had not given up on pouring! Ray and I were sitting there going over the weekend's rugby results, ready for the 8th call of the day to arrive. Before long we had the phone call from a woman on a company excursion who had pulled into the Esso petrol garage in Purls Bridge and put petrol in a diesel Renault hire car in error. She was rather affected apparently, saying "I can't believe I have destroyed the vehicle! I am just so familiar with filling up my petrol vehicle I completely didn't remember I was running a diesel!" I just advised her to relax and not to be concerned, and that things like this happen. She managed to maneuver the car into a secure space and, because it was only a few miles off from the office, we were able to arrive at the customer without delay. The bad fuel was removed so she could get back to the hotel she was lodging in. Even though we got thoroughly drenched, it was all worth the effort seeing her drive off contented and much less anxious. Yet another job in Cambridgeshire well done in my books!

Fuel contaminated with water

Water contaminated fuel, whether it is petrol or diesel, is definitely a significant situation to deal with in a vehicle - particularly in present-day common-rail engines. Putting water in your petrol or diesel can potentially bring about idling problems, irregular running, abnormal smoke and, if it is not remedied properly, in some cases blown injectors. Having water in petrol is quicker to clean out as compared to water in diesel - mainly due to the fact that diesel is an oil. However we are able to solve both circumstances pretty expediently.

Take note however that in the event that the vehicle was started with the water contaminated fuel it will likely require a new fuel filter fitted seeing that the previous one will likely be thoroughly wet and useless.
